Gerhard conoci\u00f3 al americano, \u201cun diestro polemista que sab\u00eda escurrirse como una anguila al verse arrinconado en una disputa,\u201d en verano de 1961, con motivo del viaje que realiz\u00f3 como docente invitado a los cursos del Berkshire Music Centre de Tanglewood, Massachusetts. Un lustro m\u00e1s tarde Cage pidi\u00f3 a Gerhard una p\u00e1gina para la colecci\u00f3n de partituras\u00a0que estaba reuniendo para una exposici\u00f3n, proyecto que tuvo como resultado la publicaci\u00f3n de\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/uncap.lib.uchicago.edu\/view.php?eadid=inu-ead-mus-archon-1484\" target=\"_blank\">Notations<\/a>\u00a0(Something Else Press, 1969).<\/p>\n<p>Y as\u00ed fue como a Gerhard se le ocurri\u00f3 la partitura de <em>Claustrophilia<\/em>, una p\u00e1gina dedicada a Cage que describe minuciosamente los detalles de una acci\u00f3n musical para ocho arpas, cuatro receptores de onda corta y dos monitores encargados de supervisar el dispositivo electroac\u00fastico (controlando desde el auditorio el sonido de las cuatro radios, que se encuentran entre bastidores).\u00a0El 22 de Diciembre de 1966 Gerhard envi\u00f3 a Nueva York la partitura de <em>Claustrophilia<\/em>\u00a0en el env\u00e9s de una hoja de su \u201cConcierto para Orquesta\u201d junto a la siguiente carta:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dear John Cage,<\/p>\n<p>This out-size Christmas Card wont reach you in time as I promised, I\u2019m afraid; nonetheless, my very best wishes to you for the New Year go with it. I wish you\u2019d perform it! Each player may play any solo piece, study (exercise) chamber- and \/ or orchestral-part he likes \u2014 rest bars and all \u2014 passing from the one to the other at will. It is desirable that no two players would have duplicating material. The performance should start in silence and concentration, unbroken until some player feels impelled to strike a first round. Others may follow in the same manner, in their own time, with their own choice of piece.
